How Do I Get Rid Of Bad Breath?

Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining good oral health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental problems such as gingivitis and periodontitis. In order to prevent any dental issues, it is necessary to practice good oral hygiene. Listed below are some ways to achieve good oral health.

Brushing your teeth

The benefits of brushing twice per day include the prevention of cavities and gum disease, a brighter smile, fresher breath, and improved confidence. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes each time, plus flossing daily. Brushing your teeth helps prevent tooth decay by removing food particles that can lead to plaque buildup on teeth. Tooth decay is preventable with good oral hygiene habits and seeing your dentist regularly. When you don't brush well, bacteria can build up and cause bad breath. The American Academy of Periodontology reports that 80% of people with persistent bad breath have a dental condition as its source. Brushing and flossing also remove bacteria and plaque from your gums, helping to prevent gingivitis.

Flossing

Did you know that flossing helps get rid of bad breath bacteria from your mouth and prevents gum disease? When you floss, you remove food particles and plaque from the crevices between your teeth where brushing doesn't reach. If food particles and plaque stay on the teeth, they decay and turn into cavities. Cavities are the #1 cause of bad breath. While you may have an odor problem because of dry mouth, the main cause of bad breath is bacteria and decaying food particles in your mouth! Be sure to floss regularly to remove food particles and debris that can cause tooth decay and bad odors.

Brushing your tongue

The bacteria that cause bad breath live on your teeth and gums, but they can also grow on the tongue. So when you brush your teeth, don't forget to brush your tongue too! In addition to getting rid of odors caused by bacteria and food particles, brushing your tongue can help you get rid of plaque buildup and reduce your risk for tooth decay. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the surface of your tongue. Brush as far back as you can in your mouth without gagging yourself. Rinse well with water when you're done. Follow with mouthwash for additional odor removal and some fluoride to strengthen your enamel.

Cleaning your dentures or dental appliances

You should clean your dentures and appliances every day by brushing them thoroughly using a denture brush and a non-abrasive cleanser to keep them free of debris. In addition to keeping your dentures clean, you also need to keep them moist when not in use. To do so, soak them in a soaking solution or water overnight so they don't dry out and become brittle. If you have partial dentures, try to stick to a diet that is free of sticky foods.

Avoiding dry mouth

Bad breath can be caused by many factors, but one of the most common is dry mouth. Saliva is used to help clear the mouth of food and bacteria, as well as wash away the acids produced by oral bacteria that cause bad breath. Without saliva, these factors stick around and can lead to unpleasant odors in your mouth. A lack of saliva may be caused by dehydration, smoking, certain medications, or problems with your salivary glands. If your bad breath is caused by dry mouth, the first step you should take is to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. This will help keep your mouth moist and help remove food debris and plaque from your mouth. You may also want to use a moisturizing mouthwash or toothpaste. If dry mouth persists and you suspect it may be caused by a medication you are taking, talk to your physician about switching medications to see if it helps with your breath. If it is caused by another problem, such as gum disease, then you will need to take steps to treat the disease.
